No one would ever believe if we say that Aamir Khan, known for his chivalry and indomitable spirit, was in tears in an award function. It is not typical of Aamir Khan, but that is what happened! Aamir Khan, who is in Chennai to receive the Gollapudi Srinivas Award, could not control his tears on stage when he listened to director K. Balachander’s eloquent and moving speech. Yes! The man, who was undaunted by atrocities heaped upon him by antisocialists when he participated in Narmada Bachao Aandolan or when people with malevolent intentions tried to tarnish his image by misinterpreting his views, was moved to tears by a septuagenarian’s speech.
While speaking about Aamir Khan and his directorial venture Taare Zameen Par, eminent director K. Balachander said that if not for filmmakers like Aamir Khan, the glory of the film world would have died long ago. He said filmmakers like him are the ones who make Indian Cinema recognizable worldwide by making films that bring about change in the society.
As Aamir Khan, the tough guy who never shows his feelings in public, was listening to the director’s speech, one could notice his moist eyes. Later, when Aamir came to the microphone to deliver his speech, he first went to Mr. Balachander and requested for the paper containing his speech. Then, a moist-eyed Aamir explained his act to everyone; he said that when he grows old and gets a chance to bestow praise upon others, he will definitely use this speech. Then he immediately pointed out that by this he did not mean K. Balachander has grown old. He said that he is still unbelievably young at heart and spirit. The actor said he was surprised by the humility of the director and also added that his praise has highly motivated him.
This gesture and speech of Aamir Khan produced much applause in the hall. Aamir definitely won the hearts of the audience.
Earlier, in a press meet on the eve of the awards ceremony, Aamir Khan befriended several people including the press members with his good manners and amicable behaviour. Aamir Khan, who seldom attends an awards function even if it is to honour him, has been the talk of the town ever since he agreed to come to Chennai to receive the Gollapudi Srinivas Award.
There is no doubt Aamir is returning home with lots of sweet memories.
