The dispute between the Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat led Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) that organizes the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the Delhi-based Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF), over giving more powers from the Centre to the State government in hosting IFFI 2008, has been resolved after a meeting held on Wednesday with Minister for Information and Broadcasting P.R. Dasmunshi in Delhi, Digambar Kamat said.
Addressing presspersons, Digambar Kamat said that a memorandum of understanding between the DFF and ESG would be signed in the next few days. "There was lack of consensus over certain things which have been worked out after my meeting with Priyaranjan Dasmunshi," he said.
According to the new formula, ESG will be in charge of the Retrospective, Country Focus, Indian Premieres and Short Film Festival sections in the upcoming IFFI, scheduled between November 22 and December. However, Digamber Kamat clarified that Goa had not given any thought to organize IFFI on its own.
IFFI was caught in the controversy after DFF and ESG began tossing the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among themselves. DFF rejected the MoU to be signed with the Goa government, which stressed that the ESG should be allowed to independently handle certain parts of the film festival. DFF informed the state government that the MoU for IFFI 2008 should be an exact replica of the MOU prepared for last year's film festival. Later, ESG acted in similar fashion, rejecting DFF's documents. The ESG had also begun lobbying for Bollywood support, in case the festival is held on its own.
