The 54th National awards (2006) have been announced. Raj Kumar Hirani’s film, Lage Raho Munnabhai, swept four awards at the function held in New Dehli.
The film has won the Best Popular Film Award, Best screenplay award (Abhijat Joshi, Raj Kumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra), best lyrics award (Swanand Kirkire for 'Bande Mein Tha Dum') AND an award for best music; the film’s beautiful music was by Shantanu Moitra.
Kabir Khan’s Kabul Express won the Indira Gandhi award for best film.
The best director award went to Madhur Bhandarkar this year too for Traffic Signal; he received the award last year for his film Page 3 and he has also won it earlier for Chandini Bar.
Acting Category:
Best actor award: Soumitra Chatterjee for his role in the Bengali film Podokkhep.
Best Actress award: Priyamani for her exceptional acting in the Tamil film Paruthiveeran.
Best Supporting Actress Award: Konkona Sen Sharma for her role in Omkaara (Hindi).
Other Winners:
Nargis Dutt award for the Best Feature Film on national integration: Kallarali Hoovagi, a Kannada movie based on a novel written by B.L. Venu.
Best Feature English Film: Amol Palekar for his movie Quest.
Best Feature Film on Family Welfare: Karutha Pakshikal (Malayalam) and Faltu (Bengali).
Best non-feature Film Award: Bishar Blues by Amitabh Chakravarty.
Best Feature Film on social issues: Hope (Telugu).
Best Feature Film on Children’s issues: Care of Footpath (Kannada)
Best Animation Film: Kittu (Telugu)
