At the Ninth Annual Bollywood Awards ceremony Awards held on May 26th at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, US, Rang De Basanti, Lage Raho Munnabhai, and Dhoom 2 got four awards each and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna won three. While they were broadcast live in major parts of the world, their broadcast to India was delayed.
Dhoom 2 won awards for best actor Hrithik Roshan, sound (Dwarak Warrier), cinematography (Vikas Sivaraman & Nirav Shah) and choreography (Shiamak Davar). Galatta.com congratulates Nirav Shah, our friend and well-wisher, who is also the ace photographer of several Tamil films.
Rang De Basanti, another patriotic film with Aamir Khan in the lead and Madhavan in a pivotal role, got awards for Kirron Kher (supporting female actor), screenplay (Rensil Dsilva, Rakesh Omprakash Mehra), editing (S Bharathi), and art direction (Samir Chanda).
Lage Raho Munnabhai, the film with the unusual patriotic background of Gandhi, with Sanjay Dutt-Vidya Balan in the lead roles, was awarded for best film, direction (Rajkumar Hirani), story (Hirani with Abhijit Joshi), and dialogues (Hirani).
Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, set in NY, garnered awards for best music (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy), best female singer Alka Yagnik for the title song, and Manish Malhotra for costume design.
Bipasha Basu was judged best actress for her role in Corporate. Omkara won two awards for supporting and negative roles (Vivek Oberoi and Saif Ali Khan respectively) and Fanaa for Best Playback (Shaan for Chaand Sifarish) and best lyric (Prasun Joshi for Subhanallah). Anupam Kher got the award for his comic role in Khosla ka Ghosla; male and female debut awards went to Upen Patel for 36 China Town and Kangna Ranaut for Gangster.
Asha Parekh received the Lifetime Achievement Award; filmmaker Mira Nair received the Pride of India award; Danny Glover (who starred in Dreamgirls and Shooter) got the prestigious International award for "Outstanding Contribution to Global Entertainment"; Ken Naz got the Honorary Award for "Contribution to Indian Cinema".
Mona Singh, the heroine of the SET Asia TV series Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, who also won the Jhalak Dikhlaja dance competition, and Vivek Oberoi were the hosts of the show. The awards were organized by Kamal Dandona and sponsored by the Wal-Mart group, which has about around 36,000 Asians working in its various branches across the world. Over 10,000 people attended the ceremony.
