Sanjay Gupta's poetic feelers to his wife

Sanjay Gupta's poetic feelers to his wife
Galatta [October 30, 2007, 1:15:50 PM]

Sanjay Gupta wants his estranged wife Anu back. At any cost. After holding out a peace plan in every way he can, the producer has now gone and dedicated the whole 3-volume soundtrack of Dus Kahaniyaan to his wife. "Hoping that she would hear Gulzar Saab's poetry in it as the call of my heart .This is my last desperate call of the heart to Anu," confesses Gupta.

After Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, the Dus Kahaniyaan soundtrack again takes Hindi film music away from the song-and-'dunce' formula. Sanjay Gupta has always taken film music to another level. Item songs and Sufiana-rock tracks came into their own with Gupta's Musafir and Kaante. But now the filmmaker is bored with the established sound.

In Dus Kahaniyaan, the soundtrack that releases this weekend, Gupta has heralded a new format of presentation to go with a new sound. Explains Gupta, "The whole web of film music has become too jaded. We need to spin a new kind of sound to save film music from stagnancy. I’ve used two totally new composers Bappi Lahiri's son Bappa and Gaurav Dasgupta besides Anand Raj Anand and Shafqat Ali Khan. Both the new boys are amazingly innovative in sound. For the first time, there are three CDs in the pack. The first CD contains the songs. The second contains their remix."

But it’s the third CD that really holds optimum interest. Informs Gupta, "I’ve got Gulzar saab's poems recited in the voices of the entire cast comprising the ten stories of Dus Kahaniyaan. These voices include Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Nana Patekar, Sudhanshu Pande and Neha Dhupia. The poems have been selected by Gulzar saab to suit the individual stories and characters. The listeners would've the choice of going straight to the poem of their choice if they don't wish to hear the entire CD."

So is this the mellowing and aging of Sanjay Gupta? "I guess I've matured. I've always wanted to collaborate with Gulzar Saab. I'm his biggest fan. And this is my chance to get poetry back into our music. At a time when I feel I've got bored with all the assembly line products and the item songs it's time to bring poetry back to our film music. That's why I've dedicated this album to my wife. Every poem that Gulzar saab has selected for the album is a tribute to my love for my wife."
